skies and showers and thunderstorms with us. temperatures in the 70s for the next couple of hours. we'll have the complete forecast as well as looking it at hurricane bill. a man shot and killed through the window of his east baltimore home. it is a murder that has shaken his community. it happened south island in east baltimore at 4:30 on thursday. tonight brian reports on the story behind yet another baltimore homicide. >> reporter: daunte gunner was murdered yesterday. the name may not mean much to you. but for this diverse neighborhood on the east side his death shattered nerves as wrecklessly as the three bullet holes through his window. >> i can honestly say it does. everybody was just feeling sick about it. >> reporter: because for this block it doesn't take long to see the angers on people's

faces. daunte was a mentor to the kids around here. he has a criminal record but some say it used it to counsel other youths against the lifestyle. a beloved voice silenced. >> someone banged on the door. when the victim walked up to the window to look out to see who it was knocking that's when that person opened fire striking the victim through the window. >> reporter: a crude way to murder. but the first in nine days in this city. the longest stretch all year between homicides. in fact homicide numbers have slowed in the past month nearly eequally last year's record-low at this time. >> we have gone nine days without homicides in baltimore. going after the root of the problem and the violence is proving effective. >> reporter: for this city improving numbers but numbers can be apathetic for it is the singular tragedies that

profoundly change a neighborhood. >> i know we have problems here but i have never seen this happen ever. >> reporter: homicide number 142. but a first on this block. in east baltimore brian abc 2 news. >> if you have any information on who may have killed daunte gunter you are urged to call city police. baltimore police have found a tanker truck they think was involved in a deadly crash involving a bicyclist. a police commander wrote in an e-mail that video clearly shows the cyclist, 67-year-old johnuates to be at fall. all 12 queen ann's county football players were treated and released from the hospital. detectives did seize a large

water container that many of the players were drinking from. a maryland man walks away from a fiery plane crash in new jersey. it happened early this morning a quarter of a mile from the airport. >> the flight was attempting to run down the runway. possibly half way it attempted to abort the landing. during that time it struck a tree and came to rest in the parking lot. >> the co-pilot and pilot from pennsylvania were at a nearby bus stop. alert but badly burned. the plane was carrying medical specimens. the pilot is in critical

condition. bail has been denied for two teenagers in a charge police say was racially motivated. the 16 and 17-year-old the face charges of attempted first degree murder. they have a preliminary hearing set for september 18th. they were arrested in connection with the beating of 76-year-old james privet who was fishing in the park. the charm city roller girls will be holding a fundraiser tomorrow night for privet. the all-women roller derby league wants to help pay his medical bills and any legal fees he may face. 5% of profits from beer sales will go to the effort. the charm city roller girls play tomorrow. doors open at 6:00. a prisoner who escaped from a howard county's sheriff's

deputy is back in custody tonight. u.s. marshals say they found him last night at a home near richmond, virginia inside a wall. >> we don't know who owns the house. it is not his brother's house. it is still under investigation. we don't know what the relationship is between the man and the occupants of the house. >> the howard county deputy has been released. a convicted murderer pleaded not guilty for selling a nine millimeter pistol for $100 to steven medicare fair's girlfriend. she used the gun to kill mcnair in july. an update on a story we first told you about last week andmont county prosecutor will

handle the case of a judge accused of deflating a car tire. the judge said he was angry because the woman driving the car had parked in his space. the case will be heard in montgomery county to avoid a conflict of interest. circuit court judge has been suspended from hearing criminal cases until the investigation is completed. if you'd like to take advantage of the federal cash for clunkers program you better hurry. the government is letting the air out of the program this monday at 8:00 p.m. cash for clunkers has brought thousands of people into showrooms nationwide has consumers trade in gas guzzling cars. >> 20% of our business is cash for clunkers. people are coming in saying i'm here to try to get a clunker deal. >> they are bringing in older model cars. they are exchanging them for

better, more efficient cars. >> still all the dealers are hoping they get their money from federal government. even though the popularity of the program has meant dealers have been slowed to get paid most say they have seen a spike in business. cash for clunkers program ends monday night at 8:00. thousands of people are canceling easy pass after the state started charging a monthly fee for the service. maryland transportation authority says 19,000 users filed requests to close accounts last month. the $1.50 month fee went into affect last month. it is a small fraction of the 50000 customers overall. word of a $29,000 bonus for the baltimore city school chief is drawing some fire from parents and teachers. the bonus is on top of his $250,000 salary.

now. current temperature 77. 81 hagerstown. up in philadelphia 75. out in the atlantic hurricane bill continues to churn. over the past 12 hours this is what bill has been doing. continues to take a turn towards the north passing between the continental united states and bermuda. it looks like all along the eastern seaboard we'll see rough surf and rip tides as the system makes its way towards the north and east. the national hurricane center says bill will continue to turn towards the north and steer out into the north atlantic not bothering us at all. not making landfall in the united states. we'll see win and waves along the eastern seaboard. throughout the day we had storms impacting us between 1:00 and 4:00 this afternoon. here they come there. very heavy shower and thunderstorm activity. right now we have more shower and thunderstorm activity to the west of us. right now maryland's most powerful radar is indicating
